Dr. Wykeham McNeill, is slated to announce details of several major projects, being earmarked for implementation within the industry, when he makes his contribution to the 2013/14 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on June 12.Speaking at the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association’s 52nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Sunset Jamaica Grande Hotel, in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, on Saturday, June 1, Dr. McNeill pointed out that the projects are expected to be “transformational”, while pointing out that the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) will have a pivotal role in implementing these.“The Tourism Enhancement Fund must be a transformational body. I want to see big projects that make a difference to Jamaica,” he stated, while adding that the TEF’s input will also be outlined during his sectoral presentation. The Minister disclosed, however, that consultations have commenced with stakeholders in Ocho Rios regarding the projects to be undertaken in that area. He pointed out that these talks have gained resonance among the parties with whom the Ministry has been dialoguing.Pointing out that projections for the 2013 summer and winter tourist seasons are “looking good”, Dr. McNeill appealed for continued collaboration among all sector stakeholders, “in the interest of the industry”.“I think our partnership is a really strong and good partnership; and it is something we can use as an example for the entire country, when we are all working together to develop Jamaica, land we love,” he stated. The Minister, however, lamented continuous reports being received about the extent of visitor harassment occurring, particularly in the resort areas, which, he asserted, must be decisively addressed. In this regard, he informed that the Ministry has initiated discussions with several key stakeholders, inclusive of the security forces and the judiciary, to institute measures that will curtail such undesirable behavior.“Over the years we have discussed the issue of harassment in Jamaica, and I have taken the initiative now to address it seriously. We have been having discussions, and we are going to be looking at the issues of anti-harassment. Right now, we are doing some work to this end in Ocho Rios, because it is important,” he disclosed.Dr. McNeill contended that if this scourge is rooted out, Jamaica’s tourism industry will be transformed significantly, resulting in increased visitor arrivals, yielding dividends redounding to the country’s long-term benefitContact: Bryan Miller Advertisementscenter_img RelatedTeam Jamaica Impacting Tourism Sector RelatedGov’t Looking at Registration System for Artistes Major Tourism Projects to be Announced in Sectoral DebateJIS News | Presented by: PausePlay% buffered00:0000:00UnmuteMuteDisable captionsEnable captionsSettingsCaptionsDisabledQualityundefinedSpeedNormalCaptionsGo back to previous menuQualityGo back to previous menuSpeedGo back to previous menu0.5×0.75×Normal1.25×1.5×1.75×2×Exit fullscreenEnter fullscreenPlaylast_img read more

first_imgRUSSIA’S HOPES of building the Moscow – St Petersburg high speed line suffered a heavy blow last month when some provisions of the decree signed by President Yeltsin on September 13 1991 establishing the Russian High Speed Shareholding Co RAO VSM were wiped off the statute book. All that has happened on the ground apart from a symbolic ceremony on July 30 1993 is some work on the new station in St Petersburg. This does not form part of the main project and is funded by a foreign loan with a government guarantee. Dr Igor Kisilev of RAO VSM insisted in mid July that the move ’does not mean the cancellation of the project’.The main difficulty is that traffic between the cities has fallen far short of forecast levels. A report from rail research institute Giprotranstei argues that ’the volume of passenger traffic will only attain the level of 1989 by 2010 if there is constant economic and social development.’ The prospects of that look thin.In the meantime work is progressing on upgrading the existing 650 km line for trains to run at 200 km/h, as achieved to a limited extent with the ER200 high speed train built in the 1970s. About one-third of the line has so far seen track upgrading and improvements to the 3 kV DC catenary; the intention is to complete the work by 2000. By then optic fibre communications links should be installed along the whole route. The aim is to run high speed trains between the two cities in a timing of 4h 20min. Rolling stock is likely to take the form of Sokol trainsets, a prototype for which is reportedly under construction; rolling stock provisions of the 1991 decree remain intact. Among contributing suppliers is SMC Transit, which has developed prototype door assemblies.HIn line with the Russian Railways reform programme, all 17 regional managements are setting up separate companies to run long-distance passenger and commuter services. The first long-distance companies were established on the October, North Caucasian and Kuybishev railways, and the other 14 should be in place by November. The commuter companies are to be set up by December. V Shatayev, Director of the Ministry of Railways’ Passenger Service Department, said in June that accounts for freight and passenger businesses have been kept separately since April 1. olast_img read more

Downtown Country Christmas planned for LaFollette

first_imgBy Charlotte UnderwoodLaFollette City Administrator Jimmy Jeffries (standing) and downtown merchants have announced Downtown Country Christmas festivities for Dec. 6, 13 and 20th from 5 to 7 each day. Christmas sales, gift giveaways and holiday activities are planned for each day. LAFOLLETTE, TN (WLAF) – Christmas festivities will be held in LaFollette on Dec. 6, 13 and 20th for the first ever Downtown Country Christmas. The event will kick off on Dec. 6 and will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. each Friday leading up to Christmas. Downtown merchants will be hosting a slew of Christmas sales as well as doing drawings for gifts and prizes at each business each week. On the 20th, there will be a grand prize drawing valued at $500. The City will donate the money to the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce, which will then spend it on gift cards from down town businesses to be given out on the 20th. You must visit downtown businesses for tickets and be present to win.The LaFollette High School-Community choir will be singing carols on Dec. 6. There will also be a Christmas tree lighting at 6 p.m. at the Christmas tree in town at the Fleet Building.  Another lighting ceremony will be held at Freeman Park shortly after. There will also be caroling on Dec. 13. Nikki Campbell with Smith Ace Hardware said they plan on grilling on the 13th as well.  On Dec. 20, the LaFollette Church of God will present a live nativity scene at the park and Pastor Michael Dent will do a reading of the Christmas Story.Free popcorn, photos with Santa Claus and holiday activities will be available each Friday.Down town LaFollette business owners and city administrator Jimmy Jeffries have held two town hall meetings to discuss ways to spur business for the holidays. According to downtown merchants and the city, business has been off since the construction closing of the lane in front of many of the downtown businesses. The bridge construction is not scheduled to be complete till sometime in May, according to Jeffries. To combat this and to also provide holiday activities for the community, the city and merchants have planned these holiday events on the three Fridays leading up to Christmas.“I know it’s been tough on the merchants, and there’s not been anything we can really do to fix this, so we really hope this helps bring in extra business for the holidays and also gives the citizens something fun to do,” Jeffries said.Flyers with merchant sale information, as well as festivities planned will be printed up and placed downtown and at other local businesses and shops. Information will also be announced on the city’s social media page. WLAF will announce details as they develop on the website, tv and radio. If the events are successful, they could become an annual holiday happening, according to organizers. Oileáin Árann Hosts West of Ireland Offshore Racing Event This Weekend

first_imgAction from Last Year’s Races In Lahinch. The wonderful and scenic surroundings of Oileáin Árann will be the host venue for the 2017 West of Ireland Offshore Racing Association (WIORA) races this year with the first races underway tomorrow (Wednesday). For the first time ever, Cumann Huicéirí na Gaillimhe and WIORA have joined forces to organise an event to include both Galway Hookers and modern yachts racing side by side, on Sat 8th July. There will be serious bragging rights up for grabs!Club Seoltóireacht Arainn is unique. As the only Gaeltacht sailing club in Ireland! The club was recognised as a Category 1 Sailing Club by the board of the Irish Sailing Association (ISA) in April 2017. They run very successful Summer sailing courses on Inismór, mainly for the children of adults that were born on the island but now live elsewhere. These kids return to Aran to stay with grandparents and attend these Summer courses. They will also be running swimming lessons in the inner harbour during WIORA week and part of the harbour will be closed off for this event.Through huge voluntary effort, spearheaded by marine related businesses around Galway Bay, and with the permission of Galway County Council, the committee is set to achieve something that government departments has failed to deliver over many decades! They will be installing a 100m marina of floating pontoons in time for the event. Pontoon layout enclosed. No government funding has been provided to fund this pontoon development. This is a really exciting development for the island and has the potential to attract many of the travelling Irish, French and English yachts to tie up at Kilronan as they make the trip up the west coast. It also provides an excellent facility for future regattas to be run on the island.WIORA Aran 2017 is expected to see a revival of the fortunes of this event, following the economic crash, with up to 50 yachts racing and another 30 cruising yachts attending the event as observers. We expect up to 500 sailors on Inishmor all week long! This is the 40th anniversary of an overnight race to Kilronan, run by Galway Bay Sailing Club (GBSC). Back in 1977, the commodore of GBSC was FF minister Bobby Molloy who regularly raced his yacht to Aran. The late ex-minister remains very popular in Aran for his tireless work to develop the islands. To commemorate the event, the WIORA committee has decided to dedicate a race to his memory. His widow, Phyllis, is traveling to the islands for the weekend to present the race winner prize at the Saturday night prizegiving.Cormac MacDonnacha is the head of the organizing committee for WIOR.
